My 5yr old daughter, Bella, is growing her hair out in an attempt to be like her new favorite princess, Rapunzel. (Well, maybe not quite as long as Rapunzel!)Yikes! Though I think a cute bob would suit, her daddy is all for it; therefore Bella is all for it! He loves long hair on his girls, and she admires any opinion of her daddy! (Thanks, Dad!) Yeah, it's cute and all, but....I have to admit that brushing hair is one of my most dreaded "mommy task"! Ugh! Especially the longer it gets! Oh the tangles, the whining, and tears (from mommy and child)! It can be a MESS!
You parents of girls know what I'm talking about! No amount of detangler or conditioner can help in that moment of hair brushing fury. Sometimes you try to be gentle, but you have to hear the faint whines longer; while other times you just rake through briskly to get it over with and endure horrible shrills and screams! Regardless of method, it's a daunting task in our household.
Tangles are what they are; a confused snarl of hair, intertwined by awkward complications! Whether it be through a outdoor breeze or a hard nights sleep, rubbed against a pillow, they are messy, complicated, and unbearably difficult to get rid of.
Much the same is our sin. The author of Hebrews reminds us that is easy to get tangled up in sin, but we need to throw it off in order to not continually get wrapped up in the mess! Sin is nothing but a "confusing snarl, intertwined by awkward complications". It's pure drudgery getting yourself out of a sinful mess, so just throw it off!
I wish my daughter's hair situation could sound so simple. Sounds to me like I should just "throw (cut)" it off!
Hebrews 12:1
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses,
let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily
entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us."
A style of her own!
What's one of your most dreaded mommy/daddy task?

Great analogy! Sin gets us tangled up just like our daughter's long hair after sleeping or playing outside. I love this!
ReplyDeleteLove that analogy! Hair brushing is an absolute nightmare at my house too, I so know your pain! Sin is exactly like that, gets in so easily, but is a big mess to get out! Thanks Lindsay, great post!
ReplyDeleteI feel your pain with the tangles because I have three girls of my own. In the last couple of years, I've grown to enjoy "hair time" as some of the most precious times to talk. It helps if I do their hair in special ways. My hope is that it will keep our communication strong in the years to come.
ReplyDeleteGreat analogy! I have boys myself, so the long hair situation hasn't been an issue so far but I do get the point! :-) (with my hairline, I'm safe from the tangles... lol) Getting tangled up in sin however, is something we cal ALL work to avoid!
ReplyDeleteHave a Blessed Day!
I so get the tangle thing, having 2 little girls myself. And perhaps even more so, though, I can empathize with being entangled with sin. Thankful for the One who can bring beauty from my messes!
