Distorted Vision

\

In a hurry to get out of the house for a doctor's appointment, I quickly placed Marleigh on the bed for a diaper and wardrobe change! She would just have to eat breakfast in the car. Nate, already dressed and ready to go, had been extra whiny on this morning and needed some extra  "attention"! I had finally appeased him for a few moments with a pair of binoculars like Mickey Mouse had used on the most recent episode. In the midst of changing Marleigh, it happened. I heard a loud thud, then a torturous scream to follow coming from the living room! Had it not been for the loud thud, I probably would have passed it off for just another whiny moment, because that's just how bad his whining was that day!

Before I could get to him though, Nate had made it to me in need of major consoling! I noticed immediately, he was justified in his tears and loud cries for help. Looking into his big blue eyes, you couldn't help but notice the  big blue ring around one of those eyes. It was pitiful. The appointment would just have to wait! This boy was in much need of TLC.

There wasn't much guess work as to what had happened. Nate had been walking around holding the binoculars up to his eyes. The problem: he was holding them the wrong way, so everything looked a whole lot further away than it actually was, including THE WALL! He smacked full force into the wall giving himself an immediate black eye! Oh, that boy! What were people going to think of me when they saw my 2yr. old walking around with a black eye?

Sigh.

Have you ever done something silly like this spiritually?

Have you ever been a bit far-sighted in your spiritual walk?

Farsighted means you can see what's far from you, but you've got a problem seeing what's right in front of you. It's a problem many people with perfect eyes have - when it comes to seeing the flaws and failures that are right in front of them. (Ahem...I'm speaking to myself on this issue!) If we choose to put on the glasses of our culture and our circumstances, everything may seem a little blurry and fuzzy, having no true form or purpose. We end up getting ourselves hurt as well, much like Nate. But when we begin to live our lives according to His Word, as if everything is a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus"(Phil. 3:7-14), we can begin to see God's perspective in our world, culture, and everyday choices.

Allow him to be your vision!

  Philippians 3:8
"What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ."

This is one of my favorite hymns. It is such a fervent prayer of mine. Check out more history on this 8th century poem HERE.

  1. What a great illustration (at your poor baby's expense! I hope the TLC was effective). How often do I do this very thing? Missing the most important things (or Person) in life because my mind is set on that far-off goal? Very thought-provoking! I think I'm going to walk around with a magnifying glass today. I wonder if they have a Mickey Mouse one?

  2. Poor Nate! :(

I have to admit I have made silly mistakes like this. Spiritual and not spiritual. I want Him to be my vision and my guide.

  3. Oh I love that song! Wonderful worship!:) Isn't it amazing how a song can totally lift your spirit! I totally agree about letting God be our vision. Sometimes I feel near sighted...only concentrating on what's right in front of me rather than thinking of things eternal!:) great post!

  4. Poor little guy! We've had similar incidents as our boys have grown, and they always hurt your heart no matter the circumstances. Your analogy from this event however, is spot-on. Far too often is our spiritual vision unclear, leading us to take the "easy" path rather than that which we know is right.

    Great reminder!

    Have a Blessed Day!
